There are so many hundreds of glass tools, that all the different choices can boggle your mind. For a lot of artists, they will look at stained glass grinders as their first major buy. There are quite a few things to consider when buying your first grinder. The type you will buy will depend on your needs and the budget that you have. Don't worry though, there are always alternatives available that will make your jobs easier, no matter your budget. First thing we should cover, why do you need a grinder? Well, its a tool that shapes the glass after its been rough cut. Grinders us a coated bit to shave off the excess glass to get it ready for using with copper foil. Typically, you will have two grinding bits with each stained glass grinder.
Everyone needs to start somewhere with a grinder and a good selection is typically the Gryphon Gryphette Grinder. A big plus for this model is that, not only is the pricetag great, it also gives you a lot of power. This is really ideal for a starter. Probably also someone who only plans on doing maybe two or three projects per year and not much more. You are in luck though, stained glass grinders tend to have very good resale.
For someone advancing up from the hobbyist, you want to look at something with a little more power and that has a few more 'bells and whistles'There are many good. Fortunately, you're not coming too much higher in price compared to the hobbyist models. Typically, the price jump is pretty small when you move from the hobbyist models to the next step. I really like the Glastar G8 Allstar Grinder. It is a great graduation for those who are starting to get a little more serious with their glass work. In some circles, these grinders would be entering professional grade. These grinders are made for use on a daily basis so they can definitely made for a lot of projects
The Pro Models aren't for many people, probably just the most serious artisans. If you aren't doing major projects and using this everyday then it will be overkill for what you need it for. The Glastar G9 Disc Grinder is the tool for you. It has the capabilities for creating boxes, lampshades, and panels. If you need a straight edge, then rhere is no better tool than this one. Again I'll mention this though, given the cost of this model, only the most serious artists should consider and invest in it.
I'm hoping this gives you some guidance on which stained glass grinder is best for your needs and your budget. I know its not an easy task with the many stained glass supplies in the marketplace to know which ones you need to purchase and which one would just be a luxury. A quality stained glass grinder is absolutely something you need to purchase if you want to progress. It will for sure make your life easy and, right next to your Spectrum Glass, its a pretty important piece of the pie and most likely its going to be the first major tool that every artist will buy. So, put on your goggles and enjoy your new grinder!
